Correctional Service Canada is reviewing the circumstances of an inmate's death at the Drumheller Institution.

CSC said the inmate died on Thursday. He isn't being named to respect the wishes of his next of kin, CSC said.

At the time of his death, he was about four months into a two-year sentence for possession of property obtained by crime and possession of drugs used for trafficking.

CSC said police and the coroner have been notified.

The man's cause of death was not released.

The death is the first at the medium-security prison, located about 130 kilometres east of Calgary in southern Alberta, this year.

The prison, which has a capacity of 582 offenders, saw one inmate death last year. Mark Kelly, 50, died in custody on Dec. 7, 2020.
