King Charles is marking his 77th birthday in a fitting setting: a storied castle.
The King was greeted with cheers — and a special birthday cake — as he celebrated alongside Queen Camilla, 78, in Cyfarthfa Castle in South Wales on Friday, Nov. 14.
The gathering brought together members of the local community, including several connected to Charles and Camilla’s patronages, such as The King’s Trust and the Royal Osteoporosis Society. Welsh comedy actress and writer Ruth Jones (who co-created the BBC hit Gavin & Stacey with James Corden) and fashion designer Julien Macdonald were among the notable attendees, along with local businesses like Cocos Coffee and Candles and Enaid Wellness.
Cyfarthfa Castle — built in 1825 and considered one of Wales’ most significant historic buildings — now serves as a museum and art gallery. The landmark is currently at the center of a long-term restoration effort aimed at preserving its heritage and expanding its galleries and 160-acre park for future generations.

The King's next stop was at South Wales’ new metro depot in Taffs Well, near Cardiff, which will be home to a fleet of 36 cutting edge tram-trains – a centerpiece of the region’s new transport network. Charles officially opened the depot, after taking a tour of one of the state of the art tram-trains which will provide a more environmentally-friendly service for the new Cardiff and region transport system.

King Charles' birthday comes at the close of a very difficult period for the royal family. He has had to tackle the renewed fallout from his brother, the former Prince Andrew's association with the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein — which culminated in Charles removing his brother’s last royal titles and banishing him from his home, Royal Lodge in Windsor, to live in seclusion on the royals’ privately owned Sandringham estate in Norfolk, 110 miles north of London.
