Atlanta-based hairstylist Jamelle, aka Jah’Maica Cherise, uploaded a “quick DIY” on how she created a braided wig that has left us speechless and garnered over 172,000 views on Instagram.
In the clip, we see Jamelle’s fingers go to work as she box braids neon yellow hair extensions onto a wig cap that’s attached to a canvas cork mannequin head. She adorns the ends of the braids with chunky colorful beads before gluing the wig onto her shaved head. To prove the wig won’t slide off, Jamelle bounces up and down and moves the braids from side to side.
“It took me three days to create the yellow DIY braided wig,” Jamelle tells Yahoo Lifestyle, “but it typically takes me a few hours nonstop to complete a normal braided wig.”
When questioned whether the hairpiece was heavy to wear, she admits that it’s “usually light,” but the beads add a weight of around five to eight pounds.
Jamelle started working in salons as a high school student. She then went on to hone her craft and obtain a cosmetology license from Empire Beauty School.
“I have been doing hair for 10-plus years,” she says. “I got interested in hair weaves about six years ago when it became a high-demand market. I knew it was something that I could do.”
Now the proud owner of JahCherise Weave Express, Jamelle spends her days designing “about 15 weaves per day.” Clients can book appointments for a range of services online, from a $99 traditional sew-in to a $450 braided wig similar to her Insta-famous hairdo.
Using hair extensions purchased from the local Atlanta Beauty Depot and “regular bonding glue,” the self-proclaimed “Queen of the 1 Hour Sew-In” can install, cut, and curl your wildest hair dream.
