Introducing Acrinova (STO:ACRI), A Stock That Climbed 68% In The Last Year

The simplest way to invest in stocks is to buy exchange traded funds. But one can do better than that by picking better than average stocks (as part of a diversified portfolio). To wit, the Acrinova AB (publ) (STO:ACRI) share price is 68% higher than it was a year ago, much better than the market return of around 24% (not including dividends) in the same period. If it can keep that out-performance up over the long term, investors will do very well! Looking back further, the stock price is 40% higher than it was three years ago.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

During the last year Acrinova grew its earnings per share (EPS) by 2.2%. This EPS growth is significantly lower than the 68% increase in the share price. So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it a year ago.

You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. As it happens, Acrinova's TSR for the last year was 74%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Acrinova shareholders have gained 74% (in total) over the last year. That's including the dividend. So this year's TSR was actually better than the three-year TSR (annualized) of 16%. Given the track record of solid returns over varying time frames, it might be worth putting Acrinova on your watchlist. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term.
