An Iowa man has been found guilty of murder in a May 2021 killing in Prairie Village, according to prosecutors.
Michael L. Balance, 60, of Des Moines, was convicted Thursday by a Johnson County jury of second-degree murder in the shooting death of 70-year-old John Hoffman.
On May 1, 2021, Hoffman was found dead in an apartment in the 3700 block of West 75th Street after police responded there to a medical call. He had been shot multiple times, police said.
Authorities announced an arrest in the case the following day. Prosecutors initially charged Balance in May 2021 with premeditated first-degree murder.
The case was investigated by Prairie Village police and other Kansas City metro agencies. Balance is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 15.
