An alert for residents of an Iqaluit neighbourhood to shelter in place has been lifted, according to RCMP.

Earlier in the day, around 10:30 a.m., RCMP had issued an alert that told residents in the Upper and Lower Plateau neighbourhood to shelter in place over an "ongoing situation" in the area.

Then in a statement around 1 p.m., RCMP said the alert had been lifted.

The alert was sent to Iqaluit residents' cell phones, televisions and broadcast on the radio.

The alert said police were responding to a situation in Iqaluit's Upper and Lower Plateau neighbourhood and that people should expect to see a "high presence" of police officers.

RCMP did not provide any further information.
