'This isn't Toronto,' sheriff says after U.S. mayor's drug arrest

A Florida sheriff has highlighted the arrest of a local politician on drug charges with a statement that appears to reference the scandal involving embattled Toronto Mayor Rob Ford.

The Bradford County Sheriff’s drug unit recently obtained an arrest warrant for the mayor of Hampton, Fla.

Police allege that an investigation has revealed that the accused "obtained and then sold some Oxycodone."

A warrant was issued yesterday and the accused was soon arrested without incident.

Barry Layne Moore, 51, faces charges of selling a Schedule I or II drug, as well as possession of a Schedule I or II drug.

Following the arrest, the Bradford County Sheriff’s Office posted a statement to its official Facebook page.

"This isn’t Toronto," Smith said in the statement. "We will not tolerate illegal drug activity, in my jurisdiction, by anyone to include our elected officials."

The sheriff also tweeted a direct link to the statement:

Smith appeared to be referencing the recent scandal involving Ford, who recently admitted to having smoked crack cocaine while serving as the mayor of Toronto.

This month, Ford has also admitted to drinking to excess, as well as to having purchased illegal drugs in the past two years.

The story about Ford and his alleged use of crack cocaine has made headlines around the world.

It began after reports emerged that someone had been shopping a video that allegedly showed the mayor using crack cocaine.

Ford long denied using crack cocaine and the video’s existence.

But after Toronto police revealed at the end of October that they had obtained a video file that was consistent with prior media reports, Ford began calling for the release of that video.

Within days, Ford admitted that he had indeed smoked crack cocaine.
