Stepson to undergo mental evaluation before bond in capital murder of Coast stepfather

A Jackson County man charged with capital murder for killing his stepfather made an initial appearance in court on Tuesday.

Aaron Blake Haylock, 30, mumbled as Judge Mark Watts told Haylock and his legal advisors that Haylock would need to get a mental evaluation before Watts could consider a bond. As he muttered, Haylock was reminded multiple times by Watts that it was in his best interest to remain silent.

Haylock was arrested by sheriff’s investigators on Monday after a short manhunt in which the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department described Haylock as “armed and dangerous.”

Haylock fled the crime scene at Waltman Road in Vancleave in his stepfather’s white pickup truck, according to information released by the sheriff’s department. Haylock was found and taken into custody Monday evening at around 6 p.m.

When deputies arrived at the home Sunday afternoon, they found a severely injured Douglas Arguelles, 60. Before he was taken to the hospital, Arguelles identified his stepson, Haylock, as the person who attacked him, according to the sheriff’s office.

Arguelles died at the hospital Sunday evening.

Investigators discovered the truck in the Vancleave area and later tracked Haylock to Martin Luther King Park on Mississippi 57. Haylock was jailed without bond in the Jackson County Adult Detention Center.
