Jaguars end 20-game losing streak, beat Dolphins on game-winning kick in London

Urban Meyer has his first NFL coaching victory. Trevor Lawrence has his first win in the NFL. And the Jacksonville Jaguars have won their first game since Week 1 of the 2020 season.

The Jaguars topped the Miami Dolphins, 23-20, on Sunday morning in London. Kicker Matthew Wright, who tied the game in the fourth quarter with a 54-yard field goal that barely tucked inside the upright, hit a no-doubt 53-yarder as time expired.

The Jaguars set up the game-winning score with a brilliant penultimate play, with Lawrence hitting Laviska Shenault for a nine-yard connection on fourth-and-8 to set up the game-winning kick. Meyer called timeout with five seconds on the clock, and it appeared the Jaguars would throw a Hail Mary.

Instead, the Dolphins were caught napping on the play. And had they simply not touched Shenault after his first-down catch, it possible time might have run out and the game headed to overtime.

Jacksonville moved to 1-5 while Miami fell to 1-5, losers of five straight.

It was a fairly ugly game all around. Both teams committed errors late, with the Jaguars failing to convert a fourth-and-short early in the fourth quarter from the Miami 9-yard line. The Dolphins then drove 91 yards to take a 20-17 lead, as Tua Tagovailoa hit Jaylen Waddle for his second touchdown of the game.

Tagovailoa threw for 329 yards with two TDs and one interception on 33-of-47 passing, also rushing for 22 yards. Waddle logged career bests for yards (70) and TDs (two).

But Miami was undone by several dropped passes and some questionable play calls. The Dolphins had the ball with 1:49 remaining on their own 46-yard line but were stopped on a Malcolm Brown run. That put the Jaguars in business near midfield.

And even though the Jaguars looked like they were going to cough up a golden opportunity, moving backward on their first three plays — penalty, tackle for loss, sack — following the turnover on downs, Lawrence hit Shenault for 12 yards and then for nine more prior to the game-winning kick.

Lawrence threw for 319 yards and two TDs. He lost a fumble late in the third quarter, but the Jaguars' much-maligned defense picked him up on the very next play with an interception of Tagovailoa. Lawrence didn't throw an interception and now has only one pick in his past three games after throwing seven INTs in his first three NFL games.
