Year in jail for child pornography conviction
Timothy Jared Steeves of Cape Traverse, P.E.I., was sentenced Thursday to one year in jail plus three years probation for viewing, possessing, and distributing child pornography, mostly on YouTube.
The sentence for the 36-year-old, a joint recommendation of Crown and defence lawyers, was delivered in Supreme Court in Summerside.
Police launched the investigation after receiving an nonymous tip on cypertips.ca and traced dozens of child porn videos uploaded to various YouTube accounts back to Steeves's home.
The YouTube accounts were ultimately shut down. Police retrieved 914 child porn videos and 40,000 images from his home after obtaining a search warrant, most of them of infants and toddlers.
Justice Wayne Cheverie viewed some of those images.
"I cannot express in words how offensive the images I viewed were," Cheverie said in court.
"They were gross and disgusting, and it is my job to reflect society's repulsion."
Steeves pleaded guilty on all counts. He has received counselling and will have to continue with counselling as part of his probation.
He will also be placed on the national sex offender registry for life.
