Jaime Herrera Beutler now teetering on losing spot on general election ballot
Trump-backed far-right Republican candidate Joe Kent pulled nearly even with incumbent Republican Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler in Friday’s election tallies in Washington’s 3rd Congressional District.
Beutler, one of the 10 Republican U.S. House Representatives who voted to impeach the former president, had been holding on to second place in the primary with 22.62 percent of the vote, behind Democrat Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, who has 31.2 percent. But Kent’s vote tallies grew and he now holds 22.48 percent of the vote.
Heidi St. John, another Republican, has about 15.8 percent of the vote.
In the 4th Congressional District in Eastern Washington, Republican incumbent Dan Newhouse, who also voted to impeach Trump, is still holding on to the narrowest of leads in the primary race. He has 25.48 percent of the vote, while Democrat Doug White has 25.38 — just a 140-vote difference.
Republican Loren Culp is running third with 21.1 percent of the vote.
Only the top two vote getters, regardless of party, move on to the Nov. 8 general election.
The last day to vote was Tuesday, but ballots are still left to be counted as mail-in votes are still arriving.
The final results of the primary will be certified on Aug. 16 by the Secretary of State.
