Jalen Ramsey to miss opening of Jaguars camp after becoming a father

As members of the Jacksonville Jaguars reported to training camp on Wednesday, star cornerback Jalen Ramsey wasn’t with his teammates.

But it wasn’t because of his contract status, a la Julio Jones or Aaron Donald. No, Ramsey missed for a different reason.

‘Today starts a new chapter’

Ramsey, a first-team All-Pro in 2017 after just his second season in the NFL, announced on Twitter that he’ll be in Tennessee for a bit longer after the birth of his daughter:

Writing his statement over the classic still from Disney’s “The Lion King” of Mufasa and Simba looking toward the setting sun and over their pridelands, Ramsey said, “For me, family is among the most important things in my life, along with faith and football. Today starts a new chapter in my life, as Bre and I are blessed to welcome our baby into this world.

“With that said, I want to let everyone know that I’ll be in Tennessee with my family, and as soon as I’m comfortable knowing my family is healthy and happy, I’ll return to Jacksonville to rejoin my teammates on our quest to handle some unfinished business.”

Athletic genes

The “Bre” Ramsey referred to is Breanna Tate. The two attended Nashville’s Brentwood Academy together, and Tate is one of the younger sisters of Lions receiver Golden Tate. But Breanna is an accomplished athlete in her own right: she was the Tennessee state D-II champion in both the 100 and 200 meters as a senior at Brentwood, and was also a key member of the state title-winning 4×100 and 4×200 relay teams. She also was a sprinter for Mississippi State (with her twin sister, Deanna), running well in the uber-competitive SEC.

Ramsey told the blog for athletics equipment retailer Eastbay earlier this year that he hopes his child becomes a track standout.

“Most people know that I ran track (at Florida State), but they may not know how much I love that sport,” Ramsey said. “My girlfriend and I ran track together in high school and we both hold state records. We’re expecting a baby soon, and hopefully he or she will be a little track star.”

Interesting birthday

Ramsey’s new daughter was born the day after his older brother celebrated his own birthday (he wrote on Twitter Tuesday, “Never wanted to be like anyone besides my big brother. Happy Birthday Jamal!”), but she shares a birthday with another prominent man in her dad’s life.

Jaguars coach Doug Marrone was born on July 25 as well.
