It's currently unclear whether Gunn will be making a cameo appearance in the upcoming Superman: Legacy movie which begins production next year – marking the start of the new superhero extended universe. Though according to Deadline, his character will be referenced as part of the film's background, before making his official debut in later DC projects.

Maxwell Lord was first seen in Keith Giffen, J. M. DeMatteis and Kevin Maguire's 1987 comic series, Justice League Vol 1. He was most recently featured in the 2020 blockbuster Wonder Woman 1984 – notably played by The Last of Us star Pedro Pascal.

During the Invasion crossover, Lord was given superpowers when a Gene Bomb exploded. The unexpected detonation makes him a metahuman, granting the wealthy businessman the ability to telepathically influence the minds of others.

Casting announcements for James Gunn's anticipated Superman: Legacy movie have been rife, ahead of the film's release on July 11, 2025.
