Jamie Foxx made his first public appearance since his April health scare on Monday, and offered additional insight into just how critical his condition was just eight months ago.

Foxx was hospitalized on April 11 but had not disclosed the nature of his health complications. During a surprise appearance at the Critics Choice Association‘s Celebration of Cinema & Television Honoring Black, Latino & AAPI Achievements, the Vanguard Award recipient was visibly emotional as he recounted the mysterious illness that left him temporarily immobile.

“I’ve been through some things,” the Oscar winner began. “It’s crazy. I couldn’t do that six months ago. I couldn’t actually walk.

“I cherish every single minute now,” he continued. “It’s different, you know? I wouldn’t wish what I went through on my worst enemy because it’s tough when you almost— when it’s almost over, when you see the tunnel. I saw the tunnel, I didn’t see the light.”

In July, Foxx made his first official statement on his health in an Instagram video that sought to debunk rumors that he was paralyzed and blind.

“I went to hell and back and my road to recovery had some potholes as well,” he said at the time. “But I’m coming back and I’m able to work.”

The actor also explained why fans hadn’t heard from him since his initial hospitalization, adding, “I know a lot of people were waiting or wanting to hear updates, but to be honest with you, I just don’t want you to see me like that…. I want you to see me laughing, having a good time, partying, cracking a joke, doing a movie, television show. I didn’t want you to see me with with tubes running out of me and trying to figure out if I was gonna make it through.”

In that video, Foxx thanked his daughter Corinne and his sister, saying that they saved his life. He also attributed his recovery to God and “some great people.”

“I was sick, man, but now I got my legs under me,” he said.

While in recovery, Nick Cannon took over as the host of Beat Shazam‘s sixth season, while Corinne — who normally serves as the show’s in-house DJ — was replaced by Kelly Osbourne.

More recently, Foxx and Corinne were expected to co-host Fox’s new game show We Are Family, a music-centric competition that will now be emceed by black-ish vet Anthony Anderson and his mother, Doris Bowman (aka “Mama Doris”).
