Jason Pierre-Paul isn't the only athlete to suffer crazy injury

Jason Pierre-Paul emerged for the first time without his hand bandaged after his Fourth of July fireworks mishap.

The New York Daily News released an exclusive photo Thursday showing the extent of the damage on the New York Giants defensive end's hand on Thursday.

In case you missed it, Pierre-Paul was involved in a fireworks mishap in July that resulted in his right index finger being amputated and also caused other injuries to his hand. Pierre-Paul chose to keep the damage hidden from not only the media but the New York Giants franchise.

Pierre-Paul is trying to remain positive.

Don't worry, JPP, you're not alone. Here are 10 other injuries that happened to athletes while out of their sporting element:

1. Wade Boggs got a little too country…

Boggs spent the majority of his baseball career with the Boston Red Sox, won a World Series with the New York Yankees and even reached 3,000 hits with the Tampa Bay Rays. Based on his career, you'd think Boggs would be more of a city slicker, but in 1986 he found himself at the mercy of his cowboy boots, falling and bruising his rib while putting them on.

2. Alex Stepney should have used his indoor voice

As most soccer goalkeepers will tell you, it is their job to see the field and communicate the goings-on to their teammates. However, in 1975, Manchester United keeper Alex Stepney took it too far when his jaw popped out of its socket from yelling at his teammates. Literally, jaw dropping.

3. Glenn Healy really blew this one

The backup netminder for the Toronto Maple Leafs required 40 stitches after cutting his hand while cleaning his bagpipes. Yes, bagpipes.

4. Rory McIlroy should stick to golf

The No.1-ranked golfer in the world suffered a major setback this year by rupturing a ligament in his left ankle while playing soccer in Northern Ireland.

5. Gus makes the list on a technicality

Technically, this happened during a game but it's too good to leave out. In November of 1997, Gus Frerotte was making a name for himself on the field with the Washington Redskins but it wasn't until he included fans in his touchdown celebration that he truly became a household name. The quarterback took it upon himself to run over to the crowd and headbutt the wall in celebration. He was, unsurprisingly, taken to hospital at halftime.

6. Sammy Sosa sneezing syndrome

The slugging right-fielder tore his oblique muscle in 2004 from two sneezes and missed a month of games the following season from another sneezing injury. The man must have had some serious allergy issues. Fun fact: Ricky Romero was put on the DL for 15 days in 2009 for a similar sneezing injury.

7. Apparently a blowout is always bad for a goalie

In 2005, goaltender Manny Fernandez moved to Sweden to keep playing hockey in the wake of the NHL lockout. However, he ended up having to miss some action that year due to back spasms that occurred while blow-drying his hair and toweling off after a shower.

8. Cal Ripken, Jr.'s team photo fail

Cal Ripken, Jr. was in the middle of a 2,239-game playing streak when a photo op at the all-star game put everything in jeopardy. Chicago White Sox reliever Roberto Hernandez lost his balance on a platform in centre-field and accidently struck Ripken square in the face, breaking his nose. After getting looked at by medical staff, the Orioles shortstop returned to the game and kept his streak alive.

9. Retirement may have been Jose Canseco's downfall

The former major league slugger learned the hard way what the safety on a gun is for when he blew his middle finger off while cleaning his firearm. Lucky for him his long-time love didn't seem to mind.

10. Lionel Simmons was just playing around

After being selected seventh overall by the Sacramento Kings in the 1990 NBA craft, Simmons found an interesting way to celebrate: turning on his Nintendo Gameboy. In fact, in his rookie year, Simmons played so much Super Mario and Tetris that he managed to develop tendinitis in both of his thumbs.
