Jeb Bush Suggests Margaret Thatcher As New Face Of $10 Bill, America Isn’t Convinced

Republican presidential hopeful Jeb Bush would like to see Margaret Thatcher’s face adorning the $10 bill.

The former Florida governor tipped Maggie to replace Alexander Hamilton on the note during a live TV debate on 16 September.

He made the remark when he and his 10 rival candidates were asked which woman they would choose to appear on the bill when the spot becomes available to a female for the first time in 2020.

Bush said: “I would go with Ronald Reagan’s partner, Margaret Thatcher,” acknowledging it was not only highly unlikely to occur but also “probably illegal” as she wasn’t American.

Despite this, he added: “A strong leader is what we need in the White House, and she certainly was a strong leader that restored the United Kingdom into greatness” - a remark that won him applause.

Not everyone was convinced that Maggie’s face fit, however, and there was plenty of opposition on Twitter.

Bush’s rival Republican candidates offered a mixed bag of alternative faces for the note: Ben Carson nominated his mother, Mike Huckabee suggested his wife, Donald Trump said his daughter, Ivanka, followed by Rosa Parks - Marco Rubio’s preference, and John Kasich voted for Mother Theresa.

These also received a mixed response on Twitter, where the choice of Rosa Parks was one of the few to receive a thumbs up.

Meanwhile, Chris Christie pointed to the Adams family - the prominent political clan, not the TV oddities as some suspected.

A decision will be made later in the year regarding which woman will adorn the note. Seems that Maggie might be an outside bet on this one…
