Jennifer Mason sentenced for hotel meeting with student

A former Calgary Catholic school teacher who had a sexual relationship with her 16-year-old student has admitted to illegally seeing him again.

Jennifer Mason, 30, is already serving a two-year sentence for the affair with the boy between August 2012 and November 2013.

Police became involved when a member of the public reported suspicious activity in a vehicle in a northwest Calgary neighbourhood.

But before she pleaded guilty in July, she met the boy in a hotel room while out on bail.

She pleaded guilty to breaching her conditions in a Calgary courtroom Friday. Mason has been given another 30 days for the breach, but as time already served.

She will also have probation for three years.

The court heard she met the boy in May at the Econo Lodge on Macleod Trail.

Mason booked the hotel room. When police attended the scene, they called the victim's cellphone and heard it ringing inside the room. After knocking, police saw a young man fleeing from hotel room with no shoes.

Mason denied the allegation at first, but later admitted she had the student's backpack in hotel room

According to the Criminal Code of Canada, a minor cannot consent to a sexual relationship with a person who is in a position of trust.
