Jesse Tyler Ferguson recalls Patrick J. Adams being 'the only one naked' rehearsing “Take Me Out” nude scene
"I've clearly blocked it out..."
There's a classic nightmare about being the only person naked in public — a classroom, maybe, or an office — but Patrick J. Adams lived it in real life.
It came up when the Suits star and Jesse Tyler Ferguson discussed their time working together on the stage show Take Me Out on Tuesday's episode of the Modern Family alum's Dinner's on Me podcast. Ferguson explained that, because it's about a baseball player, there are several scenes that take place in the showers, where the players on his team have conversations.
As Ferguson explained, those portraying the players wore bathing suits as long as they could.
"And then it was like the day that Scott Ellis, our director was like, okay, so today's the day I think that we're all just going to go for it," Ferguson said of the 2022 revival of the stage production. "So, you know, the scene takes place...all these baseball players paraded onto the stage. You being one of them. And you take off your towels and you are the only one naked."
"Wait, I don't even," Adams said. "Really?"
Ferguson assured him that it had happened, probably because the director had explained actors practice going nude if they felt comfortable. Apparently no one did.
Ferguson said Adams had stopped the rehearsal.
"You said, 'whoa, whoa, whoa. I thought we were doing it," Feguson said. "You don't remember this?"
All the other actors then followed Adams and removed their swimsuits.
Adams said he had "clearly blocked it out," because baring his body had been difficult.
"I am the least exhibitionist person in the world... I don't want my clothes off," Adams said. "I want to wear all my clothes. I want layers. And so to have to be in front of that many people every night, it was so intense that I do feel like I had to go into a different — It's almost weird because, while you would think that would be the most nerve-racking part of of the night, it was so intense that I think I actually, truly had to leave my body every night. And, like, I don't remember it."

Ferguson let him know that he had killed it, in case he didn't remember that either. The play, about a baseball star's experience coming out of the closet, ended up winning the 2022 Tony Award for Best Play Revival.
