Joan Jett, Beakerhead & film festival: Calgary entertainment

If it's time to begin planning another exciting weekend in Calgary, here's our weekly roundup to get you started.

Film festival

The 2018 Calgary International Film Festival is underway and things really get going with screenings at Eau Claire Market on Friday.

There are a couple of documentaries that might be of interest, starting with Bad Reputation about Joan Jett. That starts Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Eau Claire 6.

Over the Limit is a Russian documentary that looks at the pain and desperation of a young rhythmic gymnast within the Russian system for training athletes.

On Saturday, why not go international with Cold War, a love story about two musicians in 1949 Poland trying to come together as the world is falling apart. It's shot in beautiful black and white and it won Best Director at Cannes.

On the other end of the international spectrum is Respeto, a dark Filipino film following impoverished kids who dream of hip-hop-greatness.

And on Sunday, The Hummingbird Project is an epic crime-drama starring Jesse Eisenberg, Alexander Skarsgård and Salma Hayek.

So you want to be a stunt performer?

If you have ever wondered what it would be like to jump off a building, or run across a film set while on fire, there's a free event just for you. Check out this "Behind the Screen" event about the stunt world happening Saturday at Eau Claire starting at 11 a.m.

It's free but you have to register for a seat and here is some more information for you.

And here's a complete list of all the festival has to offer.

Classic Noir

How about a bit of noir to go with this downcast, dreary weather?

Vertigo Theatre is kicking off its season with a classic noir, The Thin Man, by Dashiell Hammett. It's about a murder, a missing inventor, a damsel in distress, and a reluctant detective.

As intriguing as the mystery is, it's the husband-wife relationship between Nick and Nora that adds just the right touch of humour to the show.

The Thin Man runs at Vertigo — that's the theatre in the basement of the Calgary Tower — until Oct. 14.

Here's more information.

Outdoors and free

Three options for you:

The Calgary Stampede is hosting a Community Fall Fair on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

It's going to be in Enmax Park and there's going to be a free pumpkin spice pancake breakfast, wagon rides from Draft Horse Town, music & entertainment, food and a market featuring local produce and handmade goods.

Here are the details on Facebook.

Doors Open YYC runs this weekend.

Dozens of buildings that are not normally open to the public will be inviting the masses inside. This is the seventh annual Doors Open event.

Check out Fiasco Gelato, the ski jumps at Canada Olympic Park, the Cococo Chocolate factory and even Lougheed House.

Beakerhead

Last but far from least is Beakerhead, which wraps up this weekend, and there are several free events to check out.

The Calgary Burners bring a touch of Burning Man to Calgary on Friday night with A Taste of That Thing in the Desert.

On Saturday, there's a radio flyer wagon race, where engineering teams trick out the old school red wagons for races, the likes of which you've never seen before.

Then on Sunday, there's a Wander and Wonder Beakerhead event in the Weaselhead.

Here's everything you need to know about those events.
