Joe Burrow on going No. 1 to Bengals: 'If they select me, they select me'
In some years, the first overall pick of the upcoming NFL Draft remains a mystery.
This isn’t one of those years, however, as LSU quarterback Joe Burrow has been slotted into the No. 1 spot to the Cincinnati Bengals since mid-November, coming off one of the greatest college seasons ever with a Heisman Trophy and national title secured.
Although it’s been widely rumoured that the Bengals will choose Burrow without further consideration, the 23-year-old didn’t give a firm commitment when asked about the team potentially selecting him.
“Look, this is a long process, right?” Burrow said to Drew Davison of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “They have their process that they have to go through, and so I am blessed to be in the position I’m in. If they select me, they select me. I’m going to do everything in my power to be the best football player I can be.”
Burrow begun his career at Ohio State, was buried on the depth chart, then transferred to LSU where he threw 60 touchdowns against six interceptions in a dream 2019 season.
He did clarify that he wants to go first overall, however, although he didn’t mention the Bengals by name.
“Everyone does dream of that,” Burrow said. “I’ve had a lot of people who have helped put me in this position. It’s been a whirlwind couple of months, 12 months for me, and I have great people around me. The fact that I’m even in this position is a blessing for me.”
Burrow’s mother, Robin, also shot down the notion that her son would refuse to play for the Bengals.
“We have no idea where that comes from,” she said. “It’s a story out there that someone has created that doesn’t have any substance — from our perspective at least.”
