John Cena on why he proposed to Nikki Bella in the WWE ring

While most people wouldn’t list WWE‘s Wrestlemania as the most romantic place to propose, John Cena made viewers across the country swoon when he got down on one knee in the middle of the ring to ask fellow WWE superstar Nikki Bella to be his wife. During a recent chat with Yahoo Entertainment about his new movie Ferdinand, Cena says he chose to propose at Wrestlemania to make his fans a part of the moment — and to prove that it’s okay for “tough guys” to show emotion. “I proposed in the middle of the WWE ring, the place to establish [that you’re] the tough guy,” he says. “I could have [proposed] a bunch of different ways, but [the WWE audience is] my family. And I wanted to do something that I’d remember for the rest of my life, in front of my family.”

As for the upcoming wedding, Cena says his guest list will be “very small” — but his fianceé’s will likely be “very large,” due to the size of her family. “I don’t want the day to be a bunch of introductions to people that I’m only vaguely familiar with,” he says. “So I think overall it’s going to be average size.”

If you really want your heart to melt, though, stick around for the end of the video, when Cena explains how he knew how Stephanie Nicole Garcia-Colace (a.k.a. Nikki Bella) was “the one.”

Ferdinand is in theaters now.
