From John Legend Performing to Kevin Hart's Speech: Gabrielle Union Recalls Wedding to Dwyane Wade (Exclusive)
"There were so many ‘Wow, oh my gosh, this is the best thing ever moments,'" Union says of her wedding day
Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade are one of Hollywood’s most influential couples, so it’s no surprise some of the most memorable moments from their wedding featured big names from the entertainment industry.
In a recent interview with PEOPLE, the 50-year-old Bring It On actress opened up about some of her favorite wedding memories. Among the highlights for Union were performances by John Legend and Ludacris, as well as a speech from Kevin Hart.
“There were so many ‘Wow, oh my gosh, this is the best thing ever' moments,” Union says before listing off a few of her highlights. She continued, “It could have been John Legend performing… or Luda randomly performing, or Kevin Hart’s speech, or Questlove DJing.”
During his speech, Hart acknowledged how much being together appeared to make Union and Wade happy. “D, I’ve seen a change in you. You’re happy. Gab, you’re happy,” he said in his toast. “You guys had a perfect f---ing day.”
Union and Wade, 41, tied the knot on Aug. 30, 2014, in Miami. The couple had an intimate ceremony surrounded by their family and friends, including Wade’s children from his previous marriage to Siohvaughn Funches, Zaya and Zaire, as well as his nephew Dahveon Morris, whom he is the guardian of. (Wade is also father to a younger son, Xavier.)
The actress went on to share that the wedding was in part an homage to the Eddie Murphy movie Coming to America. Union explains, “Before I came down, we had African dancers come over the hill to welcome me down the path as an homage to Coming to America. That was awesome.”
Since they exchanged “I dos” in 2014, Union and Wade’s family has grown. In 2018, they welcomed their daughter, Kaavia James, via surrogate. In 2021, The Perfect Find star opened up about her infertility issues in an essay for Time magazine.

Union shared that while she wanted to experience being pregnant, it was Wade who ultimately convinced her surrogacy was the right choice for them after they had multiple miscarriages. “As much as we want this baby, I want you," she said her husband told her. "We've lost too much in our relationship for me to be okay with encouraging you to do one more thing to your body and your soul."
Being there for one another has remained a crucial part of Wade and Union’s relationship. In 2021, Wade spoke to PEOPLE about what makes his marriage to Union work.
“It's about learning about each other, learning what she wants for her life and for her career and trying to support all those things," the NBA star said.

Union added, “This is both of our second marriages, and we're super transparent about that. We didn't do it right, the first time around. There's another way — to be more collaborative and equitable. We humble ourselves, listen and we meet in the middle."
