Coronavirus: Russell Crowe hails Johnny Vegas for delivering food to vulnerable neighbours

Russell Crowe is helping Johnny Vegas spread the word about a local volunteer service in his home town, helping those in lockdown during the coronavirus crisis.

The 49-year-old British comedian is volunteering for the initiative in St Helens, delivering food, medication and other essential items to vulnerable residents and NHS keyworker so they can stay at home and stay safe.

Hollywood star Crowe, 55, said in a video posted on Twitter: “G’day folks, how you doing? This is a message on behalf of my old mate Johnny Vegas...”

He gave details of the volunteer service, before adding: “One of the delivery workers is going to be Johnny Vegas though, so expect to lose every second or third biscuit.”

Crowe then panned the camera to show off his Bafta and Oscars in the trophy cabinet behind him and put on a British accent saying: “What’s that back there? Oh look at that, that’s fancy.”

Vegas has been sharing selfies of himself on the doorsteps of homes in his local area after dropping off groceries.

He tweeted: “On behalf of St.Helens, & all voluntary groups involved with #StHelensComeTogether team just wanna say a HUGE thank you @russellcrowe for helping get our message out there #legend.”

Vegas also said: “Proud of my town and how we, like so many others, are uniting through this crisis.”

The #StHelensComeTogether initiative has been set up by The Steve Prescott Foundation and Blackbrook rugby club to collect and sort food donations and deliver them to the homes of those in need.

Vegas is not the only comedian doing his bit to help out during the pandemic. Matt Lucas is releasing his Thank You Baked Potato song as a charity single on Friday April 3rd, to raise money for FeedNHS.
