Jon Stewart welcomes fans to 'the resistance' while breaking down Trump's election victory: 'This isn’t forever'

"It turns out the election was stolen by more people voting for Donald Trump," the "Daily Show" host quipped.

Jon Stewart is joining the chorus of late-night TV hosts somberly reacting to former President Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 presidential race.

"Welcome to the resistance,” Stewart began The Daily Show’s Monday monologue, his first in the wake of last week’s election results. With an extreme closeup on his face, he said, “I promise you, for the remainder of the next four years, I will only speak to you in this tone of voice, this close to the camera.”

"I will be relentless — or, well, they will,” he continued, acknowledging the rotating lineup of Daily Show correspondents who host the show Tuesday through Thursday. “I’m here Mondays. Really not even that many — there’s dark weeks, holidays,” he admitted, then said, “The point is this: you can count on me for… truly about 15 hours of resistance total.”

The Stewart-led “resistance” campaign comes a week after Trump soared to a surprisingly big victory over Vice President Kamala Harris, winning seven swing states in his reelection bid and securing his return to the White House in January.

“It turns out the election was stolen,” Stewart quipped. “...By more people voting for Donald Trump. It’s quite a caper: Ocean’s 74 Million.”

Stewart then offered a deep-dive on not just the election results, but the response of pundits who have spent the last week analyzing Trump’s win. In a barrage of clips, several news anchors alleged that Harris loss was due to the Democratic Party becoming “too woke” for voters.

“I only have one problem with the ‘woke’ theory,” Stewart replied. “I just didn’t recall seeing any Democrats running on woke s--t.”

To illustrate his point, Stewart played a montage of Democratic campaign ads expressing conservative stances on immigration.

“Those are the Democrats,” Stewart yelled. “They didn’t talk about pronouns. They didn’t say ‘Latinx.’ It was the opposite.”

He added, “They didn’t do the woke thing. They acted like Republicans for the last four months. They wore camo hats and went to Cheney family reunions. Do you know how dangerous it is to wear a hunting hat around the Cheneys?”

As for what really went wrong, Stewart offered his own theory: “What happened was the country felt like government wasn’t working for them,” he said. “And that Democrats in particular were taking their hard-earned money and giving it to people who didn’t deserve it as much as them. And so the Democrats got shellacked.”

Stewart concluded by offering viewers a few words of comfort, pointing out that Trump’s second term as president will be temporary — and there’s no telling where America will go from there.

"I just want to please assure people, this isn’t forever,” Stewart began, with a reminder that in 1984, when Ronald Reagan won the presidency, the only state won by the Democratic party was Minnesota. “Everyone thought, that’s the end of the Democrats. But eight years later, there was a Democrat back in office. We don’t know what’s going to happen in four years at all.”
