Jonas Budd, suspect in shooting and abduction, located by RCMP

Jonas Budd, 43, who is believed to be responsible for the shooting death of 17-year-old Dustin Bird and the abduction of his own stepdaughter, was located in Saskatchewan by RCMP Thursday, but police have yet to make an arrest.

The incidents happened Wednesday at the home of Budd and his stepdaughter, 17, on the Lac La Ronge reserve, about 390 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon.

RCMP said there were four people in the home at the time of the shooting: Bird, Budd's stepdaughter (who was Bird's girlfriend), Budd, and another adult man. They said no one else was injured in the shooting and they received a 911 call from someone in the home.

The RCMP issued an Amber Alert for Budd's stepdaughter, who was found safe a couple of hours later by members of the Cranberry Portage RCMP detachment in Manitoba. Budd was believed to have connections to Thompson, Man.

Police originally said Budd fled on foot into the bush, armed with a rifle, and urged anyone who saw him to call 911 and not approach him.

And on Thursday, RCMP in Manitoba and Saskatchewan located Budd in a home in Sturgeon Landing, Sask. near the Manitoba border.

Police had Budd cornered in the residence and were communicating with him shortly before noon CT.

RCMP advised members of the Sturgeon Landing community to expect to see a higher police presence than usual. Residents have been asked to respect police barriers in the area.

Several RCMP units remain on the scene.

Police said area-residents will be notified if the situation with Budd changes.
