Jude Law has his parents to thank for his movie-star status.

On Thursday, Dec. 12, the actor, 51, appeared in Los Angeles for his Hollywood Walk of Fame star ceremony, accompanied by his wife Phillipa Coan and his two eldest children Rafferty, 28, and Iris, 24.

As the Talented Mr. Ripley actor took the podium, he thanked his parents for inspiring a love for movies in him from childhood.

"I had a mother who showed me the great silent movies and comedies and musicals and dramas of the Hollywood Golden Era, American new wave [and] foreign movies. And I had a dad who took me in the '70s and '80s to blockbuster movies where we ate our bodyweight in popcorn and chocolate," Law recalled during his speech.

The London-born actor's parents, Peter and Margaret, were schoolteachers who married in 1967, according to a 2006 article by The Telegraph.

"To have a place here amongst the talent that I grew up watching in all those films is both sublime and ridiculous," Law added in his speech. "I want to thank everyone for coming, for making this such a special day for me. I really appreciate it."

Guests at Law's star ceremony included Zach Baylin and Justin Kurzel, the screenwriter and director behind his most recent movie The Order. Law's costar in that movie Jurnee Smollett spoke at the ceremony, as did director David Lowery, who worked with Law on his new Star Wars series Skeleton Crew as well as the 2023 Disney movie Peter Pan & Wendy.

"You can't act on your own, unlike playing an instrument or writing or painting. You can't act alone. It's a frustrating side of the job, but the need to collaborate is very much at the heart of the medium's biggest reward," Law said at the top of his speech.

"And some of you here and many others that I've collaborated with over 30 years — people that I've learned from, been encouraged by, guided by, inspired by — they're the reason I have this star and I want to thank them all."
