Mamma Mia and Harry Potter star Dame Julie Walters has revealed that she is doing "really well" after being diagnosed with stage three bowel cancer.

Walters, who spoke about her diagnosis to the BBC's Victoria Derbyshire, said that a CT scan 18 months ago had discovered two tumours in her large intestine, but she has since been given the all-clear after undergoing surgery and chemotherapy.

Opening up about the impact of her diagnosis, Dame Julie said that her first feeling was that of "shock". "And then you hold on to the positive," she continued, "which was [the doctor saying], 'We can fix this'."

Reassuring fans that she is now "really well", the legendary actress added: "I've just had a scan on Monday and I know that that's clear."

A star of both the stage and screens big and small, Walters is perhaps best known for her roles in Billy Elliot, Mamma Mia, and as the beloved Molly Weasley in the Harry Potter series. She also appeared alongside her long-time friend Victoria Wood in a number of TV comedies, such as Victoria Wood As Seen on TV and Dinnerladies.

Revealing that it's "possible" her latest film The Secret Garden will be her last, Julie explained: "Something might come up, but it would have to be something I really engaged with and that didn't have a killing schedule.

"I'm not saying I'll never act again, but I don't think I can go back to [working] six days a week, five in the morning till seven o'clock at night, with a big part and having to learn lines – the stress of [that]."
