I Just Found Out Keanu Reeves Inspired GlamGlow's Famous Mud Mask

GlamGlow is known for masks that not only help clear pores and firm up faces but also serve as an excuse to post gleaming, glittering selfies. The brand's shimmering peel-off masks have garnered fans among shoppers, editors, and stars alike. The mask that started it all, YouthMud, is decidedly less flashy, but it's no less beloved by celebrities. In fact, one unexpected celebrity in particular was actually the inspiration for its creation: Keanu Reeves.

Yes, you're reading that right: Keanu Reeves — aka Ted Theodore Logan, John Wick, Neo, Johnny Mnemonic, John Constantine, and that guy who can inexplicably send Sandra Bullock time-traveling letters — is the reason YouthMud, the $59 exfoliating clay treatment, exists.

As if we needed more reasons to appreciate him.

The brand reminded us of this fun fact in an email celebrating YouthMud's 10th anniversary, and we were starstruck all over again.

"One evening, my partner and I were at a party in the Hollywood Hills with a bunch of actors and directors, and skin care came up in conversation. This A-list actor — I won’t say who — was looking for a miracle product that would make his skin look camera-ready quickly — like in 10 minutes," GlamGlow founder Shannon Dellimore told Allure's Brennan Kilbane in 2017. (Apparently, three years later, it's no longer a secret.) "I said, 'I'll find you something!'"

Not only did she find him something, she made it herself. "I wanted to do it for fun. My partner and I found a lab and did a ton of ingredient research. Clay was an obvious choice, but we found this amazing charcoal, and we researched acids, too," Dellimore said. "We gave it to him to try, and he was like, 'This stuff is amazing.' The word caught on, and our mud, which didn't yet have a name, became this backstage sensation at movie and TV studios."

At the time, we asked Reeves's publicist if he would do an interview about the product, and she was very mean, neither confirming nor denying that he used it. But we don't hold that against him or YouthMud.
