Justine Dufour-Lapointe wins World Cup dual moguls in Deer Valley
Canada's Justine Dufour-Lapointe won a World Cup moguls event in Deer Valley on Saturday, her second moguls triumph in three days at the Utah ski resort.
Dufour-Lapointe defeated Kazakhstan's Yulia Galysheva in the final, 22-13. It was her third World Cup victory of the 2015-16 season and came just two days after she won the moguls event.
It was the 33rd World Cup podium performance for the 21-year-old from Montreal, who reigns as the world and Olympic champion in moguls.
"I felt good when I woke up this morning and I knew what I had to do to perform well out there. I concentrated on my skiing without looking at my rivals to not get distracted," Dufour-Lapointe said.
"I skied for myself and I really had the feeling that I dominated the course. I adapted my skiing to be consistent and opted for fast but clean runs. I am really proud of the way I skied today."
Four other Canadians finished in the top 10 led by Audrey Robichaud, sixth, Alex-Anne Gagne, eighth, Maxime Dufour-Lapointe, ninth and Andi Naude, 10th. Chloe Dufour-Lapointe was 14th.
Rare podium miss for Kingsbury
On the men's side, Mikaël Kingsbury missed the podium in a World Cup event for the first time this season. The reigning world dual moguls champion and 2014 Olympic moguls silver medallist was upset by Finland's Jimi Salomen in the quarter-finals. Salomen went on to finish second to Anthony Benna of France. Kingsbury placed fifth.
"It was a close dual. The new race format in dual moguls forces the higher-ranked skier to change courses. The red course was more difficult today and slower. That's the one I was in when I lost," said Kingsbury.
"I skied well on the blue course and I also had a good run on the red during another round. Jimi was the fastest out of the first jump, so I had to catch up to him. I was the first to arrive at the finish line but the judges saw things differently. I am happy with the way I skied, but Jimi deserved to be on the podium."
Kingsbury, 23, from Deux-Montagnes, Que. won the first three World Cup events of the season before finishing second Thursday in the moguls competition.
Other Canadians included Philippe Marquis, 13th, Gabriel Dufresne, 23rd and Brenden Kelly, 40th.
