New Kanata Academy in Calgary shut down by province

A private school in Calgary has been shut down by the province.

The New Kanata Academy, a Kindergarten to Grade 12 in the city’s northeast, was just granted accreditation last June.

Since opening last September in Whitehorn, the school has moved multiple times, each time necessitating a temporary closure, said Tamara Magnan, a spokeswoman for Alberta Education.

“Alberta Education has been trying to work with the school to ensure they were meeting their responsibility to provide a safe and appropriate learning environment,” she said.

“However, they have been unable to adequately demonstrate they are meeting their obligations under the School Act.”

Alberta Education is helping parents find new schools for their children.

The school's website says it offers English as a Second Language (ESL), Blackfoot and Cree language and culture as well as other classes.
