Kansas City police traffic officer moved to out-of-state rehab facility weeks after crash
A Kansas City Police Department motorcycle traffic officer has been transported from a local hospital to an out-of-state facility for rehabilitation almost three weeks after the crash that injured him, the department released.
Traffic officers and command staff escorted the officer and his family to the Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport Monday morning.
“He has a long road of recovery,” police said in a statement on social media.
In the Oct. 16 crash near Troost Avenue and Gregory Boulevard, the traffic officer was leaving a traffic stop traveling north on Troost and struck a Toyota SUV that was driving in the opposite direction and turned in front of the motorcycle. A KCPD spokesman said the officer didn’t have enough time to react to the vehicle, and was thrown from his motorcycle.
A local business owner assisted the officer and called first responders by pushing an emergency button on the officer’s radio.
At the time of the crash, the officer’s injuries were considered life-threatening with medical staff monitoring the officer’s lungs, which were severely bruised.
The crash remains under investigation and the driver of the Toyota is fully cooperating with police, authorities have said.
