We Bet You Didn't Even Notice Kate Middleton's Nod to Queen Elizabeth After Giving Birth

Jewels fit for a queen.

Meghan Markle is rumored to be borrowing jewels from Princess Diana for the May 19 royal wedding, but Kate Middleton got her own “something borrowed,” care of Queen Elizabeth, in honor of the birth of the royal baby.

When the duchess left the hospital on Monday with the newborn prince in her arms, it was her red dress that made headlines, due to the fact that it was a clear (and chic) tribute to the dress Princess Diana wore when she took Prince Harry home from the hospital in 1985. What she wore on her ears, though—which largely went unnoticed at first—had just as much royal significance.

According to People, Middleton was wearing Queen Elizabeth II’s diamond and pearl drop earrings, on loan from her majesty herself. Middleton has borrowed the Queen’s bling in the past, and wore these particular gems to a 2016 visit to the Mauritshuis gallery in Holland, where she coincidentally peeped the famous Girl with a Pearl Earring painting, as well as on a few other occasions, People reports. She also famously borrowed the Queen's Cartier tiara for her 2011 wedding to Prince William, which is currently on loan to the National Gallery of Australia (which means, sadly, Markle probably won't have the chance to wear it to her own royal wedding).

Thankfully, anyone looking to channel Middleton’s queenly earring style doesn’t need to create Oceans 11-style plans to nab the royal jewels. In honor of the birth of the third royal baby, jeweler Claudia Bradby has recently released a piece of jewelry inspired by the Duchess of Cambridge herself. The “Mother and Child” necklace features two drop pearls—a large white one in honor of the two princes, and a small pink one for princess Charlotte—and has a similar vibe to the borrowed earrings, which are clearly fit for a present and future queen.
