Kate Middleton Channels Princess Diana for Her First Royal Engagement as Princess of Wales

·2 min read

Catherine, Princess of Wales—the royal previously known as Kate Middleton and the Duchess of Cambridge—just wore a look that channeled her husband Prince Williams’ late mother, Princess Diana, who was Princess of Wales before her.

Middleton’s first royal engagement since the passing of Queen Elizabeth II was a visit to Windsor Guidehall to thank those involved in the queen’s momentous funeral. And for the occasion she selected a black coatdress that mirrors one Princess Di wore in the 1980s. Middleton’s black coatdress is from Dolce & Gabbana, a brand with a well-documented problematic history, and features big gold buttons down the front and at the shoulders. Despite criticism for promoting Dolce & Gabbana, this isn’t the first time Middleton has worn this coat dress in public. (She does love a repeat ’fit.)

This time Middleton paired the coatdress with black tights and simple black pointed-toe pumps. She wore white and gold drop earrings and her hair down. See the full look below:

Middleton's look mirrors an outfit that Princess Diana wore for the Armistice Day wreath-laying ceremony at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris in 1988. Here’s Princess Di’s black coatdress with gold buttons (’80s version):

Middleton previously wore the D&G coatdress in April 2021 for a special visit to an air cadet base in East Ham, London. She also wore the same coat following the death of the queen’s husband, Prince Phillip, a special nod to the queen and her husband. See Kate Middleton in the coat back in 2021 here:
