For her first public appearance of the year, Kate Middleton visited the hospital where she received treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer last year. “Coming in the front entrance here, having made so many quiet, private visits, actually it's quite nice,” she revealed.
During her visit, she spoke with cancer patients and referenced her own health. “It's really tough. It's such a shock. Everyone said to me, ‘please keep a positive mindset, it makes such a difference,’” she told one woman who was receiving chemotherapy, per the BBC.
When asked how she was feeling, the Princess of Wales said she was doing well. “Sometimes from the outside we all think you've finished treatment and you go back to things. But it's hard to get back to normal,” she answered.
The Princess also hinted that she was still feeling long-term effects of her treatment. “You think the treatment has finished and you can crack on and get back to normal, but that's still a real challenge,” she said. “The words totally disappear. And understanding that as a patient, yes there are side effects around treatment but actually there are more long-term side effects…The body is amazing at telling us ‘you need to take time out.’”
For the outing, Kate didn't wear her famous sapphire engagement ring, instead choosing to wear a new eternity band that she had previously debuted in the video released to share an update on her cancer journey. Typically, when Kate visits hospitals or meets with medical staff, she removes her engagement ring to avoid being a health or hygiene hazard.
The new stack she wears on her ring finger appears to include her Welsh gold wedding band and the new diamond and sapphire eternity band. She did wear her engagement ring at Christmas, and for the photo that Kensington Palace released to mark her 43rd birthday last week.
