OTTAWA — As conservatives across Canada reacted to the fall of Jason Kenney, a defining voice in their political movement, a Liberal from the Tory heartland offered an outsider's diagnosis into the state of conservatism in the country. "Mr. Kenney was pushed out of his party because he wasn't extreme enough," Tourism Minister Randy Boissonnault, an Edmonton MP, declared Thursday. "It's time for the moderates in conservative movements in this country to step up and ask themselves: Where is this t

GENEVA (AP) — Britain and Rwanda on Thursday faced down two U.N. agencies that have sharply criticized their controversial plan in which British expects to send some asylum-seekers from the U.K. to the African country. In an interview with The Associated Press before meeting top officials from the U.N. human rights and refugee agencies, Rwandan Foreign Minister Vincent Biruta acknowledged it was “fine that they be concerned,” adding that the discussion was aimed “to bring them on board” to work
SLATYNE, Ukraine (Reuters) -The only 10 residents left in the Commune, an apartment complex in the eastern Ukraine town of Slatyne, share the hardships of Russia’s invasion, from relentless shellfire and exploding rounds to a lack of power and running water. Inside Vera Filipova's gloomy, grimy home, blackened pots litter the messy kitchen and rumpled comforters sit on unkempt beds. This block is largely intact - unlike many buildings in Slatyne, the Commune has escaped a direct hit from the nearby fighting of a Ukrainian counter-offensive that has driven Russian troops away from the city of Kharkiv over the last two weeks.
Weather balloons are essential to weather forecasting, but it takes a lot of coordination to send them up—and to track the data they capture. The Weather Network's Kyle Brittain attached some cameras to a weather balloon to get a better picture of how the process works, and the results were very dramatic.

A new mother in northern Manitoba and her baby are doing well, after they were the focus of a call two RCMP officers won't soon forget. Responding to a call for service on Kinosao Sipi First Nation (also known as Norway House Cree Nation) Friday morning, RCMP constables Dylan Fedrau and Lindsay Bawn entered a home to find Christian Danis already in labour. KYIV (Reuters) -A Ukrainian state prosecutor asked a court on Thursday to sentence a Russian soldier to life in prison for killing an unarmed civilian in the first war crimes trial arising from Russia's Feb. 24 invasion. Vadim Shishimarin, a 21-year-old Russian tank commander, asked widow Kateryna Shelipova to forgive him for the murder of her husband, Oleksandr, in the northeast Ukrainian village of Chupakhivka on Feb. 28. Oleksandr Shelipov's killing was one of what Ukraine and Western nations say is a far wider picture: Ukraine has accused Russia of atrocities and brutality against civilians during the invasion and said it has identified more than 10,000 possible war crimes.
