Kenora, Ont., school lockdowns lifted, firearm found, suspects arrested

Veteran police officer charged with theft, firearm offences

Ontario Provincial Police in Kenora say two people have been arrested after a male suspect with a firearm was seen in the north-end trail system near a number of schools.

All schools in the area were placed on immediate lockdown, including Beaver Brae Secondary School, Evergreen Public School, Valleyview Public School, Pope John Paul II School, Ecole Ste. Marguerite Bourgeoys, and St. Thomas Aquinas High School, the OPP announced in a written release.

Community services and media relations officer Constable Ronni Grosenick said the Kenora Catholic District School Board Office was also locked down.

"Around 10 a.m. police received a call that a male suspect had been observed in the trail system in the north end of Kenora, near a number of schools, and it was stated that this subject had a firearm or a suspected firearm," said Grosenick.

Police located and arrested two people a short time later and issued a press release stating the investigation is ongoing, but that the threat has been contained.

In a written release Tuesday afternoon, police said that around 1:15 pm (CT), police located the suspect's firearm in the area, and it was determined to be a pistol style pellet gun.

Police said one 17-year-old male youth remains in custody as the investigation continues, and that charges are pending.

The lockdowns have been lifted at all schools, police said.
