Kentville artist Bonnie Ross behind Canadian flag coin

You might be carrying some Nova Scotia art in your pocket.

A Kentville woman is behind the design on the new quarters commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Canadian flag.

Graphic designer Bonnie Ross, owner of Ross Graphic, was asked by the Royal Canadian Mint to come up with a concept.

"I was thinking it's the 50th year for this flag and I thought, 'My gosh, in 50 more years, it will be the 100th anniversary and what would people think of it 50 years from now?' So I thought, 'What about 50 children?'" said Ross.

Ross's quarter features 50 children of all sizes and ages holding out the Canadian flag.

"It was not easy drawing 50 little children," she said.

Ross has designed coins for the Royal Canadian Mint before. Two years ago, 12.5 million quarters with her design of the Canadian Arctic expedition were put into circulation. Twelve point five million of Ross's Canadian flag quarters began circulating nationally on June 9th.

"I do a lot of collector coins, but circulation coins are special because they do end up in someone's pocket and I say, 'Oh look they're paying for that with my money.'"

Ross's design will be unveiled in Halifax July 25.
