Khaite Ushers Us Into Demure Girl Fall
Sometimes you have to give the people what they don’t yet know they want. Designer Catherine Holstein’s label, Khaite, has become a phenomenon by sending white heels, stirrup leggings, and cashmere bralettes rocketing to the top of our wish lists. But they never feel made for virality’s sake. Her clothes, she told ELLE last year, “are designed to be combined and recombined, yet each is special on its own, because it’s been thoroughly considered. It’s a very American approach.”
Since winning the CFDA Womenswear Designer of the Year Award in 2022 and again in 2023, Holstein has harnessed the hype, keeping wait lists fed with her creations. (And speaking of viral moments, even Adam Sandler, recently photographed with a massive shopping bag from the brand, is apparently not immune to her allure.) On Saturday, she had Taylor Russell, Natasha Lyonne, and Leon Bridges in her front row, and ELLE cover girl Vittoria Ceretti strutting her runway.
To a soundtrack of Guns N’ Roses and Wilco, Holstein unveiled a spring collection in a palette of black, white, red, and pale pink. The looks injected lightness and sweetness into the Khaite girl’s hard edge, with voluminous white and pink dresses, airy crocheted pieces, and even some ladylike ’50s top-handle bags. The effect was even, dare we say, very demure? Almost as if the chain-smoking tough girl in your senior class was revealed to be a secret sweetheart.
But never fear: the louche, tough touches she’s become known for were evident in slick trenches and sharp-edged blazers. Not to mention her signature nonchalantly hot standouts, including a black dress designed to look as though a white bra was peeking out from its bodice. And for those simply looking for a more directional take on staples, the oversized leather jackets and totes should tick some boxes on your spring shopping list.
