Kidnapping Suspect Killed in Officer-Involved Shooting as Police Chase Ends in Collision

A suspect in the kidnapping and assault of a woman was killed in an officer-involved shooting in Richmond, California, on April 16 after a police chase ended in a collision.

The suspect, named by police as 24-year-old Juan Ayon-Barraza, was being pursued by police after a female was found abandoned, unconscious and wrapped in a rug or blanket on the side of the road in Contra Costa County.

A police chase ensued after Barraza was identified as the suspect and failed to stop at a traffic enforcement stop. He was also seen to be in possession of a handgun.

The 20-minute pursuit led officers through multiple streets in Richmond before the suspect rammed police vehicles.

The suspect sustained a fatal gunshot wound during this incident. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The female victim sustained critical injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where she remains in a critical condition.
