‘Our kids fought hard’: Saginaw Boswell dominates in win over Fort Worth Paschal

Saginaw Boswell dominated in every aspect of the game against Fort Worth Paschal.

The Pioneers (4-1) were firing on all cylinders, and head coach Wes Weaver and Co. secured an 44-7 victory on Thursday night at Farrington Field. Weaver said he was pleased with the outcome, but recognized there is room for improvement

“We’ve got some things that we’ve got to square away and do better at,” Weaver said. “But our kids fought hard and we’re 1-1 in district.”

Weaver said he was proud of his team’s performance tonight, considering the 28-27 loss to Euless Trinity last week.

“We got tired because of the physical nature of the game,” Weaver said speaking on last week’s loss. “We just got worn down. We as coaches, we have to do a better job of rotating guys through.”

After a bye week, the Pioneers will face North Crowley. Weaver said his team will have to be “as physical as they’ve ever been.”

“We’re going to have to play mistake free,” Weaver said. “There’s a lot of mistakes we can fix from this game. We’ve got to fix in the next two weeks.”

Boswell takes huge lead

The Pioneer’s first drive of the game was a long one. It was 12 plays and primarily consisted of short runs from quarterback Tye Renfro and running back Colin Dixon. A connection from Renfro to wide receiver Ty Dauer put the team in the red zone, and Dixon finished the series with a 3-yard touchdown run.

Boswell’s next drive was much faster. On the fifth play of the series, Renfro threw to Tres Eldridge, who easily scored, running down the sideline with an open lane.

The Pioneer’s following drive was the only unsuccessful one of the first half. When they got the ball back, they made up for it; On the second play of the series, Renfro heaved a 60-yard touchdown to Dauer, who juked a defender out of his shoes on his way to the end zone.

Dauer was on fire and couldn’t be contained. The Pioneers started in the red zone in their next series after a shanked punt, and Dauer hauled in another score after Renfro extended the play by rolling to his right; this time, it was a 20-yard reception.

To cap off the first half offensive onslaught, Renfro found the end zone for the fourth time, throwing to wide receiver Kairel Robertsonfor the 7-yard touchdown.

Paschal Panthers struggle

Paschal (2-3) had several problems executing the basics of the game. Often times, snaps were high or mishandled. In one occurrence, the Panthers lost 18-yards on a botched snap. The next play, Paschal shanked the punt and Boswell started its drive in the red zone.

Paschal gave quarterback Jashaun Thomas a tough assignment, and he had a hard time willing the team to move the chains. Thomas showed heart, but the Panther offense seldom showed signs of production.

To open the second half, Boswell forced a fumble on the third play of Pascal’s drive. The Paschal defense did it’s job, however, forcing a Pioneer punt; the Pioneers pinned the Panthers on their two yard line.

After the Panthers barely avoided a safety, Thomas completed two big passes, moving Paschal to the 45-yard line. Following another short gain, another botched snap brought them all the way to their own 28, and their momentum fizzled.

The Panther offense couldn’t stop stepping on their own feet. The defense, however, managed to get a second consecutive stop.

Finally, Paschal got on the scoreboard. Thomas put his team in a good spot with a big 30-yard run and proceeded to throw a 20-yard touchdown to Isaac Isgur.

With the Pioneer’s 27-point lead firmly out of reach, Paschal did not record a touchdown the rest of the contest. Boswell added a 32-yard field goal from Jack Garcia and a 15-yard rushing touchdown from Renfro, the last score of the game.

Notable performances

Renfro tallied 276 passing yards, with 236 of them coming in the first half. Along the way, he threw four touchdowns and got one on his legs; the QB had 87 rushing yards, giving him 363 total yards.

Renfro was confident and aggressive, choosing key moments to take it himself. Weaver said he threw the ball “real well.”

“He played really well for not being a quarterback in the system the last two years,” Weaver said. “He’s been on defense. He’s done a great job.”

Dauer finished with 126 yards and two touchdowns, hauling in five passes and averaging 25.2 yards per catch. All of his production came within the first half. Weaver said the performance was a “long time coming.”

“He’s done a great job working, and it came to him tonight,” Weaver said.

Tye Renfro and Ty Dauer had a Tye to Ty connection against the Panthers. Renfro called the wide receiver a dynamic athlete.

“He’s played on varsity football for four years now,” Renfro said. “So, he just knows the ins and outs of the game. We’re just always on the right page.”

Renfro said he was proud of the “team win.”

“We all played well,” Renfro said. “We executed what we wanted to do on the game plan.”
