Killer Mike Explains Grammys Arrest, Is Confident He ‘Will Be Cleared of All Wrongdoing’
Killer Mike issued a statement on his wild Grammys night, which included the rapper winning three awards and then being escorted out of the building in handcuffs. Killer Mike was detained by LAPD officers on Sunday and charged with misdemeanor battery after collecting his awards. His lawyer confirmed to Variety Sunday night that Killer Mike was released and “will be celebrating his sweep tonight.”
“I do want to note that last night, my team and I fielded a number of calls from concerned fans and colleagues wanting to know if I was OK. I greatly appreciate the concern and support, but I am better than OK,” Killer Mike said in a statement sent to press. “As you can imagine, there was a lot going [on] and there was some confusion around which door my team and I should enter. We experienced an over-zealous security guard but my team and I have the upmost confidence that I will ultimately be cleared of all wrongdoing. Until that time, keep listening to ‘Michael,’ and keep going after your dreams.”

On the Atlanta-based Big Tigger Morning Show, Killer Mike said Monday of his Grammys fiasco: “We hit a speed bump and then we head back to the party, man.”
Killer Mike won all three categories he was nominated in during the Grammys pre-telecast ceremony: best rap song and best rap performance for his track “Scientists & Engineers” and best rap album for “Michael,” his sixth studio album, released in June 2023.
Elsewhere in his statement, Killer Mike thanked the Recording Academy for recognizing the work that went into “Michael.” Killer Mike last won a Grammy more than 20 years ago, as a featured artist on the OutKast song “The Whole World.” In 2018, he was nominated as part of his hip-hop duo Run the Jewels for the “Baby Driver” soundtrack song “Chase Me,” by Danger Mouse and also featuring Big Boi.
Killer Mike continued, “We are incredibly proud and are basking in this moment. I am also grateful that one of my prayers has been answered — the day after my Grammy win — I learned that my son, who has been on the list for a kidney for years, finally has a match. Obviously, we are elated.”
