King Charles warmly greets Japan’s emperor on first state visit since cancer diagnosis
King Charles III, Queen Camilla and the Prince of Wales were all present to welcome Emperor Naruhito and his wife for their state visit on Tuesday 25 June.
The red carpet will be rolled out for the visitors this week, and the formal occasion will include the traditional pomp and pageantry of a ceremonial welcome on Horse Guards Parade, a carriage procession and a grand banquet at Buckingham Palace.
Ahead of his visit, which concludes a week before the UK’s 4 July election, Japan’s emperor said he has previously been welcomed “like family” by the royals.
This time around, he was seen sharing a warm handshake with the King.
