Officials in Kingsville have declared a partial state of emergency as investigators look into a leak at a gas station in the town.
Since early Sunday morning, the Kingsville Fire Department has been at the scene of Essex County Roads 20 and 23, along with the Ontario Provincial Police and the Windsor Fire and Rescue Service HAZMAT team, officials say.
People living within 500 metres of the intersection were evacuated, as the area saw road closures and traffic diverted "in support of the liquefied petroleum spill at 1958 County Road 20 West," said the Town of Kingsville in a statement.
While the areas of concern encompass parts of both Kingsville and Essex, the effort to protect residents and property is not limited in the scope of emergency responders, Mayor Nelson Santos added.
"The safety of the public is our top priority and emergency services personnel are working around the clock to bring this urgent situation to swift resolution."
At about 7:30 a.m. on Monday, OPP said in a tweet that are area remains closed to the public and the investigation is ongoing.
