They say beauty is pain, and Kit Connor sure learned that the hard way for Heartstopper season 3.

Ahead of the long-anticipated third season of the hit Netflix show, which premieres on October 3, Connor opened up about the beauty routine he underwent to ensure his character, Nick Nelson, still looked as youthful as he did in previous seasons. It involves constant waxing.

In a new interview with the L.A. Times, Kit Connor revealed filming for Heartstopper season 3 required him to wax — yes, wax, not shave — his chest, which gets quite a bit of screentime this season, every two weeks to ensure he looked as young as Nick is on the show. (For reference, Connor was 16 when he first auditioned for the show but 19 at the time they were filming season 3.)

“It was pretty intense, but I had to do it to play a 17-year-old,” Connor said of the constant chest waxing. “There are aspects of this season that are leaning into the more mature side of the story, and it needed to feel real. What’s beautiful about ‘Heartstopper’ is it’s a really simple, innocent love. But by Season 3, it felt time to start taking the next step and exploring these topics [of sex] that are a huge thing for young people to explore.”

Speaking to Teen Vogue, Connor and his Hearstopper costar Joe Locke got candid about filming more intimate, and often topless scenes, this season, admitting that working with intimacy coordinator David Thackeray was key throughout the entire process.

“David was very busy this season,” Connor told us. Locke added that there were “a lot more chats with David this year” since “it was definitely time for Nick and Charlie to take that step, and we wanted to make sure that it was good and not awkward. It's like a dance when you do those intimate scenes, you choreograph it so clinically.”

Some of those scenes took seven hours to film, so I guess we’ll see if all the waxing was worth the pain soon enough, with the Heartstopper season 3 premiere just around the corner!
