Kitikmeot Inuit Association members head to polls for byelection

People across the Kitikmeot region in Nunavut are heading to the polls today to choose the next president of the Kitikmeot Inuit Assocation.

Peter Akkikungnaq was elected president of the of the association in December. However, he resigned his post in January saying he felt he was too old for the job.

Nine people are vying to replace Akkikungnaq. They are: Joseph Aglukkaq, Paul Ikuallaq, David A. Porter and Walter A. Porter from Gjoa Haven; Stanley Anablak, Jeannie Ehaloak and Attima Hadlari from Cambridge Bay; and Joe Allen Evyogatailak and Donald Havioyak from Kugluktuk.

Polls are now open across the region and will close at 7 p.m. local time.
