Kitty calendar created to help fund P.E.I. cat rescue
A Prince Edward Island cat rescue organization has created an appealing kitten calendar to sell as a way of funding its work.
In just two years, Keeping Cats Homed has helped nurse and find homes for over 200 kittens on the Island.
Lori Burnell, founder and president of the organization, says the group began as a way to rescue kittens from barns, raise them to good health and find them loving homes.
"I just felt like the kittens coming out of the barns needed something else," she said.
"I prefer to see kittens go to live in peoples homes instead of in the barns and on the streets."
'I'm so proud of our calendar'
Keeping Cats Homed is run by about 20 volunteers and often faces a hefty vet bill, Burnell said.
Last year, the organization's expenses came to about $16,000, paid by a number of raffles, bake sales, silent auctions and private donations throughout the year.
This year, Burnell put together the 2018 calendar to help raise funds for the kittens' vet bills.
Each month features kittens that have gone through their organization and found a loving home.
"I'm so proud of our calendar," she said.
"All the kittens featured in the calendar are foster kittens that have come through our program and the three little kittens that are on the front of the calendar were kittens I had from eight days old."
Burnell said the three kittens on the cover came from a "not-so-good situation at all" and that she bottle-fed them until they were healthy — eventually finding a forever home for the kittens.
"They're living wonderful lives so that makes me really happy."
