Kobe Bryant Died in a Helicopter Accident

Professional basketball star Kobe Bryant, 41, has died in a helicopter crash in the Southern California neighborhood Calabasas.

Bryant was among five people who died in the accident, and there were no survivors, ABC reported. The accident happened at around 10 a.m. and was witnessed by people who were mountain biking nearby.

Bryant was drafted to the NBA out of high school in 1996 and had a 20-year career as a professional basketball player with the Los Angeles Lakers. He won gold medals as a member of the U.S. Olympic team in both 2008 and 2012 and held the NBA all-time scoring record until this year, when LeBron James surpassed him.

Bryant was not just an award-winner on the court. He also has an Academy Award for his 2018 film "Dear Basketball," that is based on a poem he wrote in 2015 when he announced his retirement.

"My heart can take the pounding, my mind can handle the grind, but my body knows it's time to say goodbye,” he wrote at the time, per the Los Angeles Times. "I'm ready to let you go,” he continues. “I want you to know now, so we can both savor every moment we have left together. The good and the bad. We have given each other all we have."
