A Los Angeles man who was accused of domestic violence and killing his former girlfriend’s pet has been arrested after a two-week long search, the Los Angeles Police Department said.

The LAPD announced in a press release that its officers arrested David Sumlin, 32, on Monday at around 12:10 a.m. after issuing a manhunt for him on Jan. 2 following an alleged heated exchange with his ex-girlfriend.

Police said that Sumlin had an argument with the woman around 11:50 a.m. on the day after New Year’s Day. Things between the two eventually escalated to violence when allegedly he threatened her and her puppy.

“Sumlin held a pillow over the victim’s dog and pointed a firearm into the pillow. Sumlin then stated, ‘It’s either you or the dog,’ ” the LAPD said.

Police claimed Sumlin shot “two rounds into the pillow striking the 4-month-old puppy.” The pet was transported to a local animal shelter where it died.

Authorities told CBS News that the LAPD found two 9mm caliber shell casings from the alleged scene of the crime. They also said in the release that the "firearm used remains outstanding."

The LAPD did not give any more information on the alleged incident, including what kind of puppy was harmed or how long the pet had belonged to the woman. Police also did not disclose whether previous domestic violence incidents between Sumlin and his ex-girlfriend had been reported.
