Labour Day weekend: What's open and what's closed in Calgary
There are scattered showers in the forecast for Labour Day weekend, but Calgarians might just bring along an umbrella to enjoy the last long weekend of summer outside.
Canmore, Banff and Lake Louise experienced a crowded summer, with parking lots for hiking trails filling up in the morning. So if you're heading to the mountains, you might want to get a head start and leave early.
City golf courses will be running with regular hours, and the Glenmore Dam pathway has reopened in time for the long weekend.
The city recently reopened all lanes along Memorial Drive to traffic on weekdays, but partial closures will resume on weekends — including Labour Day Monday — to allow pedestrians and cyclists to maintain physical distance as they enjoy a jaunt along the riverside.
The Calgary Zoo will be open from 9:30 a.m. until last entry at 5 p.m., with gates opening at 8:30 a.m. for members. Telus Spark will remain open until 5 p.m. as well.
Those hoping to enjoy the weekend inside can watch the Calgary Pride Parade. It will be live-streaming on Sunday and will feature 15 hours of programming.
Whatever you wind up planning, there are a few closures around the city to factor in before you start.
Calgary Parking Authority
Holiday rates will be in effect at select city surface lots and parkades on Labour day, but payment is not required for on-street ParkPlus zones on Monday.
Calgary Transit
The city will provide a Sunday level of service on Labour Day, and you can check the schedules page to find out when your bus is running.
From Saturday until early Monday, and before service starts, the Blue Line will run on a single track, on the outbound side, at Whitehorn station.
From Saturday until early Tuesday, the Red Line will be closed between Chinook and Heritage stations, and will run on a single track.
Golf
City of Calgary golf courses are open on Labour Day with regular weekday hours. This includes:
Confederation Park.
Maple Ridge.
McCall Lake.
Lakeview.
Shaganappi Point.
Landfill hours
Spyhill, Shephard and east Calgary landfills are open on Monday until 5 p.m.
Studio Bell
The National Music Centre is open only on Saturdays and Sundays, so it will be closed on Labour Day.
City closures
The following facilities will be closed on Monday:
The Animal Services Centre.
City of Calgary administrative buildings, including City Hall.
All city-owned athletic parks, arenas, pools and fitness centres, including the Calgary Soccer Centre.
