Job action postponed at Red Deer seniors care home

Workers and managers at a 154-bed seniors care home in Red Deer, Alta., have agreed to postpone all job action until Monday.

The Alberta Union of Provincial Employees and Symphony Senior Living at Aspen Ridge are holding meetings Friday towards resolving the dispute before seniors care is affected, said union president Guy Smith.

Workers will be updated on the talks in a meeting Friday evening.

About 130 licensed practical nurses, health-care aides and other support staff were set to walk off the job at at 1 p.m., Friday.

The union served strike notice Tuesday and the company responded with a lockout notice, he said.

Smith said the two sides were trying to reach a first contract, but remain far apart.

"It really is around salaries and the competitive salaries that are out there", Smith said. "Comparing the work of a licensed practical nurse or a health-care aide — it's the same work regardless of which facility you work in."

The company has said it will bring in replacement workers.
